WinemakersDirect.us Winemaker of the Day for 04/13/2010

Those who know David well were not surprised when he became a winemaker. His curious nature keeps him always trying to figure out how things happen and once he fell in love with wine, it was only natural that he began making some. He started as a hobby winemaker but it wasn’t long before David became obsessed with starting a winery. He studied winemaking at UC Davis, and you’re likely to run into him at a wine-related class these days, too. David likes to stay on top of winemaking trends.
David is thrilled to have the opportunity to locate the winery in Woodinville. He looks forward to meeting you and sharing his wine. Cheers!

The “Winemaker of the Day” at WinemakersDirect.us is Ross Cobb of Keller Estate in Petaluma, CA.

April 12th, 2010

WinemakersDirect.us Winemaker of the Day for 04/12/2010

n 1970, Ross Cobb’s father had an epiphany. On a business trip to Burgundy, David Cobb purchased several bottles of Pinot Noir and fell in love. Twenty years later, his son, Ross, had the same “aha” moment. As a freshman at the University of California at Santa Cruz, Ross too fell in love with Pinot Noir. Now the winemaker at Keller Estate, Ross shares the same philosophy as the Keller family: to produce the best quality wines – including Pinot Noir, of course – emphasizing the unique terroir of the vineyards in The Petaluma Gap.
A graduate of the University of California at Santa Cruz, Ross majored in soil science and environmental studies. His concentration and passion for the environment fits perfectly with the vision of sustainability at Keller Estate. “When you have a balanced and healthy vineyard,” he says, “you’ll end up with a balanced and healthy wine.”

April 8th, 2010

WinemakersDirect.us Winemaker of the Day for 04/08/2010

Hunt Country winemaker Christopher Wirth has over 25 years’ experience in the wine industry, mostly in California and Oregon. It is his passion for cool climate wines and for his native upstate New York that brought Chris back to the region.
He studied winemaking at Santa Rosa Junior College, and worked with famed winemakers Julia Iantosca of Lambert Bridge (formerly at William Wheeler) and Kevin Hamel of Preston Vineyards.
In 2001 Chris moved to Oregon to pursue his passion for Pinot Noir. There he worked for Elvenglade Vineyards, a small producer of premium wines, and consulted for Raptor Ridge and Owen Roe wineries. He became enraptured not only by Pinot Noir, but also by Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc! He recalls, “One of my oenology professors would simply say, ‘Wine should be fun.’ I take winemaking seriously, but at the end of the day, whether paired with food or all by itself, the purpose of wine is to bring enjoyment to family and friends.”
Both Chris and his wife, Joanne, have returned to their roots. Joanne grew up in Hammondsport and Chris is from Ilion in central NY. Their two grown children, Hanna and Micah, are both involved in the wine industry. Chris’s hobbies include gardening and cooking, playing the guitar and singing.

The “Winemaker of the Day” at WinemakersDirect.us is Michael Shaps of DelFosse Vineyards and Winery in Faber, Virginia.

April 6th, 2010

WinemakersDirect.us Winemaker of the Day for 04/06/2010

After many years studying at the prestigious Lycee Viticole de Beaune in Burgundy, France, and working for esteemed French winemakers and vineyards, Michael Shaps made his way home to study the potential for winemaking along the East Coast. In Virginia he saw a developing wine industry with promising viticultural conditions and the opportunity to make a difference in a young industry. In 1995 he moved to Charlottesville and worked at Jefferson Vineyards for six vintages. While there he earned over a hundred medals in local and national competitions. In the June 2000 issue of The Wine Spectator he received three 87 point ratings for his Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, the highest average score of over thirty East Coast wineries. Michael Shaps continues to produce wines under his own label, Michael Shaps Wines. Shaps takes the winemaking approach of creating wines that are meant to age in the bottle and develop over time, therefore the wines are heavily extracted and oak aged. As a consultant, Shaps hopes to maximize each winery’s unique strengths by highlighting the characteristics of the individual vineyard site and representing the winemaking philosophies of the individual wineries. With this approach Shaps has been able to consistently produce award-winning wines in an industry that is rapidly becoming a national player in the wine world.

The “Winemaker of the Day” at WinemakersDirect.us is Milla Handley of Handley Cellars in Philo, CA.

April 4th, 2010

WinemakersDirect.us Winemaker of the Day for 04/04/2010

After earning a degree in Fermentation Sciences in 1975 at the University of California at Davis, Milla worked for winemaker Richard Arrowood at Chateau St. Jean. Following the birth of her first child in 1978, Milla moved to the remote winemaking region of Anderson Valley, where she became assistant winemaker to Jed Steele at Edmeades Winery. Milla struck out on her own in 1982, making the first Handley Cellars Chardonnay in her basement. At that time, Anderson Valley was still uncharted viticultural territory. “I was captivated by its possibilities,” Handley says. “Anderson Valley’s beauty and isolation appealed to me. My husband Rex and I felt that Anderson Valley was a good place to raise children. The people here possessed an independent spirit, and I felt I could follow my own course, somewhat removed from the entrenched winemaking culture. I wanted my wines to capture the essence of this extraordinary place.”

In 1977, Dr. Peter D. Oldak, an emergency physician and his wife, Brenda, moved to a 12 acre farm in South Hampton, New Hampshire. In 1982, merely as a hobbyist home gardener, he planted six individual grape vines. Four years later, he started making wine. Each year more vines and varieties were planted to see which would do best in our climate, soil, and location, and which varieties would make excellent quality wine in the chilly climes of the Northeast.
