Ah the Rooster, where did he come from? Way back in 1999 bringing in a 1,000 lb load of Old Vine Zinfandel driving the forklift from the front of the old barn back to the crush pad just like a hundred times before. The “cock a doodle doo” was all I heard and them bam out came our resident Rooster, all proud and full of himself, prancing across the pad, oblivious to the fork lift baring down on him. With momentum in play, slamming on the brakes a 1,000 lbs does not stop on a dime and the bin went sliding along the forks with the Rooster ducking below and popping out the other side. This sent the crush crew into hysterics at my deft driving. Once I recovered from a combination of embarrassment and laughter it hit me like that very same Rooster had hit my back after walking past him, he must be on the label!

    Winemaker Eric Luse

In 1980, as a young photographer with the San Francisco Chronicle
driving through the vineyards on my way to another winery shoot I began
meeting growers and vintners that shed another view of their lives. From
those conversations I developed understanding of the special qualities of specific vineyards and their geo-graphic location. My roots with photojournalism insisted a respect for the people that allowed me into their lives in a profound and intimate way, celebrating victory and sharing tragedy. I found myself applying the same principals to these unique vineyards.
Respecting the growers, their fruit and making the wine based on the
uniqueness. No heavy handed overuse of new Oak Barrels or over ripe fruit
but respect for the quality fruit and a desire for you the consumer to “Taste
The Vineyard,” “why mask that beautiful fruit with a bunch of Oak, find the
balance.” Years followed running a home wine making group from these
vineyards, completing Enology courses through UC Davis, Viticulture at
Santa Rosa City College with Dr. Vine, Rich Thomas. Then came Eric Ross in
1993 and Dr. Vine was crucial in honing in that a Heirloom tomato can
never be artificially created. Just like quality wine cannot be artificially
created, it has to come from the fruit! With that each vineyard and it’s fruit
has different protocol for the fermentations, percentage of new oak, be it French or American, time in the barrels and at long last in the bottle.
