July 27th, 2010

WinemakersDirect.us Winemaker of the Day for 07/27/2010

Most of my career has been spent pursuing the elusive traits that make great Pinot Noir. From my early days at Zaca Mesa Winery to my 20-year tenure at Byron Vineyard to our small family operation at Ken Brown Wines, I have continued to experiment with clones, rootstocks, soils and winemaking techniques, exploring the tremendous potential for Pinot Noir in Santa Barbara County.

My first experience with Pinot Noir in what is now known as the Sta. Rita Hills came in 1976 when I met Richard Sanford and Michael Benedict and tasted one of the first Pinot Noirs from the Sanford and Benedict Vineyard. Launching the Ken Brown label in 2003 reinvigorated my excitement about the vineyards and the wines that brought me to Santa Barbara County in the first place 30 years ago. Experience tells me that great achievements still lie ahead, and it is in that spirit that I continue the quest for the next echelon of quality in Pinot Noir.

The “Winemaker of the Day” at WinemakersDirect.us is Jim Kakecek of Van Duzer Vineyards in Dallas, Oregon.

July 24th, 2010

WinemakersDirect.us Winemaker of the Day for 07/24/2010

A stickler for the best, Winemaker Jim Kakacek has overseen the winemaking of Van Duzer wines since 1994. Jim was one of the youngest vintners in Napa Valley when he crafted some of the Wine Spectator’s “Top 100 Wines of the Year.” But it was the opportunity to improve the level of winemaking that drew Jim to Oregon. “It’s exciting to be in on something new. I know that when we plant the right clone of the right varietal in the right spot, we will make Pinot Noir that is easily as notable as Napa Valley Cabernet.”A graduate of the University of California, Davis in enology, Kakacek (pronouced “Kuh-kay-sic”) received his practical training at Monticello Cellars in Napa Valley. Starting as an intern working harvest, he rose rapidly to become winemaker. He was part of the team that created the 1988 Corley Reserve Chardonnay and, while winemaker, crafted the 1992 Corley Reserve Chardonnay. Although he cut his teeth on Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, Kakacek developed a passion for Pinot Noir. This challenging, delicate varietal first led Jim to Oregon winemaking.

The “Winemaker of the Day” at WinemakersDirect.us is Michael von Heckler of Warm Lake Estate in Lockport, New York.

July 22nd, 2010

WinemakersDirect.us Winemaker of the Day for 07/22/2010

An Electrical Engineer of twenty eight years with Lockheed Martin, Michael von Heckler began his journey of winemaking in 1977 at a Les Amis du Vin in Greenvale, New York. There Serena Sutcliffe, MW spoke on Champaign and instilled a life long desire to achieve Master Winemaker certificate and diploma, which Michael did in 1995 under Mary Ewing-Mulligan, MW, in the WSET diploma program in NYC at the International Wine Center and then with Ian Mitchell at the Liquor Control Board of Ontario in Toronto.

He first began making wine on an amateur basis. Having been exposed to great wines of Bordeaux, et. al. He made wine only from vitis vinifera and purchased grapes from well known areas, such as long Island and California. All of the grapes were purchased directly from the growers. He was awarded numerous medals for his wine from Intervin, American Wine Society and others.

In 1996 Michael discovered that just across the Canadian border in Ontario there is a large wine industry located adjacent to an age old limestone plat/outcropping, know as the Niagara Escarpment. The industry is still growing with over 7000 employees in the vineyard, winery and tourism related businesses. He had noticed that the escarpment continued on the United States side of Niagara River and asked himself,
