WinemakersDirect.us Winemaker of the Day for 06/30/2010

My interest in winemaking and organic farming began as a college student in 1977; I had been drawn to farming as a trade through my interest in the Back to the Land movement and I had begun home winemaking as a homestead skill. With a strong heart-felt connection to Lopez Island which I had developed as a child, I knew early on that I wanted to make Lopez Island my home.
These dreams and desires began to coalesce in 1979 while hitchhiking through France. I serendipitously found an opportunity to work on a vineyard in the Bordeaux region. After spending a growing season with Peter and Fox King (my generous mentors), I began learning pruning, tractor driving and other farming skills. I quickly found I was in love with growing grape vines!

June 29th, 2010

WinemakersDirect.us Winemaker of the Day for 06/29/2010

Most of my career has been spent pursuing the elusive traits that make great Pinot Noir. From my early days at Zaca Mesa Winery to my 20-year tenure at Byron Vineyard to our small family operation at Ken Brown Wines, I have continued to experiment with clones, rootstocks, soils and winemaking techniques, exploring the tremendous potential for Pinot Noir in Santa Barbara County.

My first experience with Pinot Noir in what is now known as the Sta. Rita Hills came in 1976 when I met Richard Sanford and Michael Benedict and tasted one of the first Pinot Noirs from the Sanford and Benedict Vineyard. Launching the Ken Brown label in 2003 reinvigorated my excitement about the vineyards and the wines that brought me to Santa Barbara County in the first place 30 years ago. Experience tells me that great achievements still lie ahead, and it is in that spirit that I continue the quest for the next echelon of quality in Pinot Noir.

The “Winemaker of the Day” at WinemakersDirect.us is Forrest Klaffke of Tualatin Estate Vineyards in Forest Grove, Oregon.

June 27th, 2010

WinemakersDirect.us Winemaker of the Day for 06/27/2010

Forrest Klaffke
Winemaker

The Winemaker at Willamette Valley Vineyards and Tualatin Estate Vineyards is one determined soul.

Forrest Klaffke is the first to arrive at the winery every day – a pattern he established as Assistant Winemaker 10 years ago. Forrest came to Oregon from winemaking in California at the request of then winemaker Dean Cox. They worked side-by-side until Dean’s untimely passing in October 1995; the tragic loss was a blow to the winery, but Dean’s legacy to produce the highest quality wines was carried on by his apprentice.

Forrest was promoted to Winemaker after Joe Dobbes, the Winemaker who followed Dean, started his own Oregon winery in late 2001. Now 52 years old, Forrest has worked in wineries for over 30 years. His first job was screening winegrape deliveries for quality at Bonded Winery #7, owned by United Vintners near Sacramento, California. Lacking Oregon’s careful land use planning, this beautiful agricultural enterprise was squeezed out to make way for California’s suburban sprawl, forcing the winery’s closure in 1986. Now long gone, over one hundred giant redwood wine vessels create a lasting memory.

Forrest moved on to work in Mondavi’s cellar and later at Sebastiani, rising to Cellar Foreman with a crew complement of forty. While gratifying, Forrest was interested in making small, hand crafted lots and perfected a style of port he now makes today “from scratch” in the cellar at Willamette Valley Vineyards (first making brandy and then the port). He takes the same approach to his cooking as a gourmet chef in his own right, never writing down a recipe but creating from his imagination meals from broths, stocks and sauces long in the making. His favorite entree is lamb, first browned and then to the oven with sauce made from his own Pinot Noir.

Despite Oregon’s differences in weather from Forrest’s native Sacramento, he continues to barbecue outside all winter long. Forrest and his wife Maria along with their son Daniel, and daughter Georgiana, spend their free time at the Oregon coast or camping and skiing in the Cascades, an hour from the winery.

The key to great wine for Forrest is plant nutrition and attention given to every detail in the vineyard. He is narrowing the winery’s focus by increasing plantings at Tualatin Estate and concentrating his personal attention to those vines and soil. He continues to challenge himself and expand his awareness of new viticultural and enological practices through a commitment to continuing education at University of California at Davis.

Forrest believes that a sharper focus on soil conditions and vine health will increase the aging potential of our wines. To that end, he continues the winery’s tradition of making fruit forward, viscous wines that express their origin – Oregon’s Willamette Valley.

The “Winemaker of the Day” at WinemakersDirect.us is Scott Chafen of Dutch Henry in Calistoga, CA.

June 22nd, 2010

WinemakersDirect.us Winemaker of the Day for 06/22/2010

Scott’s initiation into the wine business began as forced labor on his father’s Massey Ferguson tractor. Many a vine suffered. Working his family’s vineyard in sleepy Calistoga soon led to stints as a cellar rat in a local winery where farming married production. Scott’s “learning curve” turned into a passion for the wine business. In 1990, Scott graduated from Occidental College with a B.A. in Philosophy and a minor in both Studio Art and Comparative Lit. After working a year in France Scott returned to Calistoga where he worked both in the vineyards and cellar of a local winery. By 1992 Dutch Henry Winery was ready to open its doors with Scott as winemaker. Since day one the winery has been owned and operated by the Chafen family with Scott at the Helm of every vintage.
Scott prides himself on being a wine “grower” rather than a wine “maker,” reflecting his personal philosophy that wines are made in the vineyard, not the cellar. Scott regularly finds time to hike through the vineyards and hills of the Napa Valley. “Winemaking truly begins in the vineyard. That’s where the secrets all are…”
