WinemakersDirect.us Winemaker of the Day for 12/31/2009

Greg Bjornstad studied Agronomy with a Foreign Service emphasis at Colorado State University preparing him for a career in international development. He first discovered fine wine in the Caribbean and his interest in wine continued while living in and around New York City. His wanderlust culminated in his moving cross-country to Davis, California, where he began his graduate studies in Viticulture in 1989.
At Davis, Greg was interested in both vines and wines, taking many enology courses in addition to his curriculum in viticulture. In 1990, he received a Wine Spectator Scholarship and worked the harvest at Newton Vineyards in St. Helena. In 1991, Greg was selected for the coveted Chateau Lafite Rothschild internship. In France, Greg was able to divide his time evenly between vineyard and winery and learn traditional Bordelaise methods. It was during his experience at Lafite that he observed that great wine is inextricably linked to the vineyard. The process is one.
Once home, Greg joined Joseph Phelps Vineyards as their Viticulturist. After four years at Phelps he was prepared for more responsibility and returned to Newton as their Vineyard Manager.
In 1996, Greg lent his skills to a “start up opportunity” beyond the known viticultural world on the Sonoma Coast. Greg joined Flowers Vineyard and Winery as Vineyard Manager and Assistant Winemaker. The Burgundy bug bit him hard and it was there that Greg first “closed the loop” as he tended both vines and wines from grape to bottle. As the backbone of the Flowers team, Greg shared in the top award from Wine & Spirits magazine as “Artisan Winery of the Year” for an unprecedented two years in a row.
In 1999, his passion, coupled with solid experience, prepared Greg to start an international vineyard consulting business. Greg works with growers and wineries to establish new, ultra premium vineyards as well as assist them in optimizing their existing vineyard’s potential to produce extraordinary wine. Some clients have included DuMol, Hirsch, Kistler, Kosta Browne, Ladera, Patz & Hall, Paul Hobbs, Peay, Peter Michael, Pisoni, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and Scott Paul. Additionally, Greg has consulted in Russia, South Africa and Australia.
Greg was also one of the two founders of Greg & Greg, Inc., a custom crush facility in Sebastopol and was one half of the Tandem Winery team, producing Chardonnay and Pinot noir from the Sonoma Coast and Russian River. Striking out on his own again, he is very proud to launch his own wine project, Bjornstad Cellars, as he builds upon his experience and continues to learn, grow and participate in the ever evolving process of wine growing, from grape to glass; the process is one.

The “Winemaker of the Day” at WinemakersDirect.us is Rick Quinn and Dave Nichols of Opolo Vineyards in Paso Robles, CA.

December 30th, 2009

WinemakersDirect.us Winemaker of the Day for 12/30/2009

Quinn and Nichols have been neighbors in two counties since 1997 when Nichols bought vineyard property adjoining Quinn’s. Together they now own about 280 acres of vineyards in Paso Robles, about 200 acres on the Eastside and 80 on the Westside. The Westside vineyards are in the Adelaide hills, producing wines such as Pinot Noir and Sangiovese, while the Eastside properties produce varietals such as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The majority of vineyards have been producing fruit since 1998, and a small percentage of it has been finding its way into wine made by Quinn and Nichols ever since.

“We both love to make wine, and have made our own ‘backyard’ wine for some time,” said Nichols. For Quinn, that “some time” dates back to his childhood in Minnesota. “I grew up in Duluth, in an Italian, Serbian, and Croatian neighborhood.” Quinn recalled. “Our families would make wine from grapes we’d ordered from California that would be delivered in a boxcar. We didn’t have any of this ‘pick in the early morning and crush a couple of hours later.’ By the time we got the grapes they were already fermenting!”

December 27th, 2009

WinemakersDirect.us Winemaker of the Day for 12/27/2009

Hunt Country winemaker Christopher Wirth has over 25 years’ experience in the wine industry, mostly in California and Oregon. It is his passion for cool climate wines and for his native upstate New York that brought Chris back to the region.
He studied winemaking at Santa Rosa Junior College, and worked with famed winemakers Julia Iantosca of Lambert Bridge (formerly at William Wheeler) and Kevin Hamel of Preston Vineyards.
In 2001 Chris moved to Oregon to pursue his passion for Pinot Noir. There he worked for Elvenglade Vineyards, a small producer of premium wines, and consulted for Raptor Ridge and Owen Roe wineries. He became enraptured not only by Pinot Noir, but also by Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc! He recalls, “One of my oenology professors would simply say, ‘Wine should be fun.’ I take winemaking seriously, but at the end of the day, whether paired with food or all by itself, the purpose of wine is to bring enjoyment to family and friends.”
Both Chris and his wife, Joanne, have returned to their roots. Joanne grew up in Hammondsport and Chris is from Ilion in central NY. Their two grown children, Hanna and Micah, are both involved in the wine industry. Chris’s hobbies include gardening and cooking, playing the guitar and singing.

“I’ve been asked, ‘Why do you make Rhne varietal wines?’ Something about the flavors of this family of grapes simply resonates in me beyond any other varietals. I’m drawn to their warm and rich personality, as well as to the indigenous grapes of Spain that are the origin of several Rhne varietals.

The “Winemaker of the Day” at WinemakersDirect.us is Erich Russell of Rabbit Ridge Winery & Vineyards.

December 22nd, 2009

WinemakersDirect.us Winemaker of the Day for 12/22/2009

Founder and winemaker, Erich Russell earned his nickname “The Rabbit,” as a world-class runner at San Jose State College. After graduation he took a teaching job at San Diego High School, in Southern California. During the summer of 79’, while on summer break, an entry into an amateur winemaking contest won him a job at Chateau St. Jean. Taking a chance, Erich quit his job and began working in the winery.

Three years later, in 1981 Erich opened Rabbit Ridge Winery and Vineyards in Healdsburg, California. His first release of Rabbit Ridge was two barrels of Zinfandel and two barrels of Chardonnay. Erich states: “I only made enough wine so that if it didn’t sell, I could drink all of it.” Today Rabbit Ridge produces just under 100,000 cases of wine per year.

In 1996 Erich discovered the potential of the Paso Robles, California area and began buying ranches and planting vineyards, motivated by his belief the area had the potential to produce some of the finest red wines in California.

In 2001, Rabbit Ridge, having outgrown the Sonoma facility, broke ground on a new 55,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art winery in Paso Robles. The grand opening was celebrated in May 2003 when Rabbit Ridge moved all its production to their new facility. Today, Erich owns 700 acres on the Westside of Paso Robles, 400 of which are planted and producing. Rabbit Ridge sold its tasting room and 20+ acres in Sonoma County in October 2007.
